Birthday party at Starbucks with Currywurst

After a week without any news we are back. The last week was very busy. We have sign the rental for the house, ordered the new kitchen and we got a new car (oh man a BMW again.... could't resist) and now are waiting for the Container. We got the confirmation yesterday that it arrived in Bremerhaven. Good sign.
Yesterday was a special day. Herve's 44 years..... He spend most of the time in the house painting the walls. In the afternoon, we picked him up and drove to Bonn. With his eyes closed we directed him to this favorite place. "Starbucks". It felt like in the US. He got his beloved VanillaLatte and a little birthday cake with Candles. After with we all got a "Currywurst" on the street. Hmm Lecker....

Nach einer Woche sind wir wieder da. Es war eine sehr beschaeftigete Woche. Wir haben den Mietvertrag unterschrieben, eine neue Kueche gekauft und ein neues Auto gefunden. ( ja es ist wieder ein BMW, wir konnten nicht widerstehen). Jetzt warten wir noch auf den Container. Wir haben gestern die Mitteilung bekommen, dass er in Bremerhaven gelandet ist. Das ist schon mal sehr gut.
Gestern war ein besonderer Tag. Herve wurde 44. Er hat die meister Zeit mit Malen verbracht aber am Nachmittag haben wir ihn abgeholt und ihn zu seinem Lieblingscafe gefuert. Bei Starbucks gab es Vanilla Latte mit Geburtstagstorte und Kerzen. Danach noch eine Currywurst an der Bude.

Je passe mes journees a repeindre les chambre de la maison.
Mercredi etait mon anniversaire. NOus sommes alles en famille Au centre de Bonn pour prendre un cafe a Starbucks. Genial, je me suis regale.
Le container est arrive au port mais les douanes font quelques difficultes. Nous ne pouvons plus attendre de rentrer dans nos meubles...

And the winner is.....

The oscar goes to Henri and Julie. They went to the new school as if they did never left it. They are integrated and have the first friends. Julie has her first playdate this weekend and Henri discovered the ping-pong play during recess. They manage the homework so great and they don't care that they are in German.

Die Oscar Gewinner sind Henri und Julie. Die beiden haben sich in der neuen Schule sofort zurecht gefunden und haben schon die ersten Freunde. Julie ist am Wochenende schon zum spielen verabredet. Henri hat das Tischtennisspielen mit seinen neuen Mitschülern entdeckt. Sie kommen beide gut gelaunt am Nachmittag aus der Schule und meistern die Hausaufgaben mit bravour, als ob es keinen Unterschied macht, dass diese nun auf Deutsch sind.

First Day of school and the house

Julie and Henri had their big day today. At 8 AM School started. Henri is in 4th grade "4d" and Julie in 2nd grade "2b". Both had a good time. Henri was writing and reading in english for his classmades and was very proud to do it. Julie has all girls as friend already. So no worries for integration. The good part for them was also that school was finish at noon.
During this time we found the house. It is in Bornheim on a Bio-Farm. No animals besides dogs and cats but vegetables. The house has 3 bedrooms and two bath and is in a not so nice condition. We will use the next two weeks to change the wall paint and install the kitchen. Can you believe? Houses come here without kitchen... We will post some pictures tomorrow.

Julie und Henri hatten heute ihren ersten Schultag. Wir mussten um 8 Uhr in der Schule in Bornheim sein. Das war sehr früh. Henri ist in der 4d und Julie in der 2b. Henri hat schon gleich seiner Klasse etwas auf englisch geschrieben und vorgelesen und Julie hat alle Mädchen ihrer Klasse als Freundinnen.
Während die beiden in der Schule waren, haben wir uns für ein Haus entschlossen. Es ist in Bornheim Uedorf und gehört zu einem Bio-Hof. Keine Tiere bis auf Hund und Katze, sondern Gemüseanbau. Das Haus ist gross genug, benötigt aber noch etwas Arbeit bevor wir einziehen können. ... Morgen werden wir ein paar Fotos hier reinstellen.

Premier jour d'ecole pour les enfants. Aucun souci, ils sont desormais des professionnels de l'integration.
Nous avons trouve une maison ou nous installer. 3 chambres, cuisine et sejour et 2 salles de bain.
Juste a cote d'une ferme bio prduisant des legumes...
Un peu de renovation a faire avant d'y entrer le 1er fevrier en esperant que nos affaires arrivent a temps (arrivee prevu au port de Bremerhaven le 28).

Day 3 in Germany

We arrived savely in Germany on the Airport (and not in the river). Since we are here we are doing mainly house hunting which is quite difficult. Henri and Julie will start school on Monday. The weather is like winter, cold, wind and rain. You might not read here the big excitement, but we are still very tired and have no Internet access. Things are a bit more dificult to get that we expected..... but time will come... stay positive..

Wir sind gut in Deutschland angekommen und auf dem Flughafen gelanden (nicht im Rhein). wir verbringen unsere Tage hauptsächlich damit eine Wohnung oder Haus zu finden. Das erweisst sich allerdings als etwas schwieriger als erwartet. Das Wetter ist misting und die grosse Begeisterung will sich noch nicht einstellen.... kommt noch.... immer schoen positif bleiben..

The Mall and Barak Obama

Our last day in America. Tomorrow we are flying back to Germany. Washington was just the right place to spend this day. We started the visit at the Capitol and had our first meeting with Obama... ok you might not call it a meeting. He drove by in a back car and turned into the Capitol. We were 10 meters far from this car standing at a red light. (Yes we are not only good citizen, there is police in every corner). This was the closest we will ever come to the new president. Wow. Check the pictures with all the black cars, one of them is his. After this event we started the walk arround the Mall. Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Roosevelt Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorials, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the new World War II Memorial. At this time we got a beautiful sunset and the Washington Monument was set in gold. The last station was the White house before we got something to eat and drink. Going back to the hotel we took the Metro and Bus. This was a little adventure but we arrived safe. Setting now in the hotel I get a bit sad. We spend nearly four great years in the United States and made a lot of friends. We will miss you all a lot. We got use to the american culture and we appriciate most of it. After tomorrow we will start all over again and we hope that we will find what we left behind.

Der letzte Tag in Amerika. Morgen fliegen wir nach Deutschland zurueck. Washington war nun genau der richtige Ort, um diesen letzten Tag zu erleben. Auf dem Programm stand die Mall und wir haben mit dem Capitol begonnen. Dort hatten wir ein kleines Meeting mit Barack Obama. OK, Meeting ist vielleicht etwas uebertrieben, er ist mit dem Auto an uns vorbeigefahren, waehren wir an der Ampel gewartet haben. Danach haben wir alle Gebaeude und Mahnmale der Mall besichtigt. Die Kinder sind ganz mutig die mehr als 7 km gelaufen. Bravo. Nachdem wir noch einen Blick auf das Weisse Haus geworfen haben, sind wir etwas essen gegangen und anschliessend mit der Metro und dem Bus ins Hotel zurueckgefahren.
Auf der Mall haben wir Washington DC in Washington WC umgetauft. Die Vorbereitungen fuer die Praesidentenvereidigung in der naechsten Woche laufen auf Hochtouren und ueberall stehen WCs herum....

Washington Wizards

We left very early Enfield and took the train to Washington. After 6 hours ride we arrived in the City which is full of police.... we wonder why... ;-)

Tonight we had a very special event. We got free tickets for the basket ball game of the Washington Wizards. We met Andrea Butler, the wife of Caron Butler at the airport last week and she arranged all for us. Thanks Andrea. The game was fun even if they lost. After the game we had the possibility to meet the team but they weren't in the best mood to come out. Too bad.

Heute sind haben wir ganz frueh Enfield verlassen und sind mit der Bahn nach Washington gefahren/ Nach 6 Stunden Bahnfahrt sind wir in dieser Stadt angekommen, in der es von Polizei nur so wimmelt... warum bloss ;-).

Am Abend haben wir ein Basketballspiel der Washington Wizards im Verizon Center gesehen. Wir hatten letzte Woche eine der Spielerfrauen am Flughafen kennengelernt und die hat es fuer uns arrangiert. Super. Wir haetten die Spieler noch nach dem Spiel treffen koennen, aber da sie leider knapp verloren haben, waren sie nicht wirklich in der Stimmung.

Put all the stuff back together

Today we got ready for the trip to Washington tomorrow. So we spend the day with packing the suitcases and all the other luggage.

Heute haben wir den Tag damit verbracht, unsere Sachen wieder zusammen zu packen. Morgen fahren wir mit der Bahn nach Washington DC.

Visit from Dena and a yummy fondue

We spend a very nice day in Enfield. In the morning we played with the kids in the snow or ice and Herve did some shopping with Gary. In the afternoon we had a very beloved visitor. Dena came with her daughter from Vermont to see us. Dena is a very good and old friend of Herve. We spend the whole afternoon together eating lunch and a tarte aux pommes. As they had more than 3 hours drive they left before dinner for which we prepared a cheese fondue. Yummy.

Thank you very much to Christa and Gary who open their house for our friends.

Wir hatten einen sehr schoenen Tag in Enfield. Am Morgen haben wir draussen im Schnee bzw. Eis gespielt und Herve war mit Gary shopping. Am Nachmittag kamen Dena mit Tochter Emma zu besucht. Sie ist eine gute, alte Freundin von Herve und kam ueber 3 Stunden von Vermont angefahren. Wir haben eine nette Zeit mit Lunch, Apfeltarte und schoenen Gespraechen verlebt.

Am Abend haben wir ein super leckeres Kaesefondue gegessen und viel Spass zusammen gehabt. Die Fotos zeigen einiges davon.

Matinee tranquille avec quelques jeux dans la neige et un tour en ville avec Gary.

En debut d'apres midi, Dena et sa fille Emma nous rendent visite depuis le Vermont.

Dena et ses parents m'ont accueilli dans le maison a Indiana, PA lors de ma premiere visite au USA il y a 23 ans.Ce fut un immense plaisir de la revoir, en partageant une tarte aux pommes.

Le soir, pour le diner, nous mangeons une fondue au fromage (merci costco pour le comte). Delicieux!

Boston - sorry we passed

I absolutely wanted to show Boston to Herve and the Kids, but our experience from yesterday was cold enough. We decided to stay in Enfield. The sun was shining but it was under 30 degrees or under 0 degrees. We did a walk, some sight seeing in Costco and a lot of nothing. Was nice too.

Heute gibt es leider nicht viel zu berichten. Wir wollten eigentlich nach Boston fahren, aber der kalte Tag in New York hat uns abgeschreckt und wir sind in Enfield geblieben. Wir waren spatzieren, einkaufen und Eis klopfen.

Nous sommes restes chez Gary et Christa pour nous reposer. Et nous en avions besoin...les enfants surtout. Nous avons juste fait une promenade dans un froid sec et sain, comme chez moi. Genial!

Lady Liberty here we come

What a day!!!

We woke up at 4:30 AM. At 6:00AM we took the train for New York where we arrived 2 1/2 hours later. When we came out of Penn Station it was snowing. Great!

We went on the top of the Empire State Building. We could barely enjoy it because of the strong and cold wind. but after the sun came out we were able to go once around the platform.

To warm up again we drank our Cafe Latte and Vanilla Latte at Starbucks before we took the subway to Wall street. Not really interesting for the kids, but they know now where you can win and loose in a minute.

We took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. There was also a strong and (very) cold wind which hampered us a little bit to enjoy the place but Henri and Julie had fun running around.

Our last destination was the Time square and the 5th Avenue. We saw the beautiful tree in Rockefeller Center but it was time to get back to the Penn station to get the train back to Enfield.

Heute hatten wir New York auf dem Plan. Wir sind sehr frueh aufgestanden, um den Zug um 6 Uhr zu nehmen. Gegen 9.30 Uhr sind wir in Penn Station angekommen und es gab einen Schneesturm. Klasse...

Das erste Ziel war Empire State Building. Dort oben haben wir einen eisigen Wind mit Schnee erlebt. Man muss schon etwas verrueckt sein, bei dem Wetter dort oben an die Luft zu gehen. Aber nach einiger Zeit kam die Sonne heraus und wir konnten einmal herum gehen. Wieder unten angekommen, sind wir erst mal zu Starbucks zum Aufwaermen gegangen. Anschliessend sind wir mit der Subway zur Wallstreet gefahren. Jetzt wissen die Kinder, wo man schnell Geld machen kann, es aber auch eben so schnell wieder verlieren kann. Zumindest in den letzten Monaten. Zu Fuss sind wir dann zur Faehre gegangen, um zur Freiheitsstatue zu fahren. Es war sehr beeindruckend, aber auch wieder sehr windig und eiskalt.

Die letzte Station war der Time Square und 5th Avenue. Dort hatten wir das Glueck, dass der Weihnachtsbaum vor dem Rockefeller Building nach stand. Um 18 Uhr mussten wir uns dann wieder auf den Weg zur Penn Station machen, um mit dem Zug nach Enfield zurueck zu fahren.

It is raining Ice

Today we are still staying with Gary and Christa. The winter brang us Icerain today and nobody wants to get outside. So we are doing some homework. The kids are starting writing their journals and cutting out material from the documantaion we took in every place.

Heute sind wir noch einen Tag bei Christa und Gary. Draussend gibt es Eisregen und niemand mag vor doe Tuer gehen. Die Kinder nutzen die Zeit um ein Reisejournal zu schreiben und kleben. Morgen fahren wir mit der Bahn nach New York.
Nous passons la journee chez la cousine de Christine. dehors il y a de la pluie givrantes et personne ne veut faire un pas devant la porte. Les enfants utilisent le temps pour faire leurs journal. Demain on va prendre le train pour New York.

From the warm to the cold

Yesterday we spend the day still in New Orleans. After a long morning with packing the luggage into the 4 suitcases and 3 bags we went to see the river walk. We took a little street train to the French market and wanted to visit a convert in the french quarter, but it was not open. So we just walked around. We have to admire that we were a little bit tired. In the evening the plane left for Hartford, Connecticut, where we arrived by midnight. Christine's cousin Christa and Gary live here. The trip and the change planes in Washington gave two of our suitcases the rest. Now we need to go shopping for new ones. Thanks United Airlines.
Today we had a "hang out" day with nice conversations around the table with Christa and Gary. We are all recovering from the late trip and used the day do a walk in the snow, watch a movie and do laundry. So there are no new pictures for today.

Gestern haben wir den Tag noch in New Orleans verbracht. Nachdem wir alle 4 Koffer und 3 Taschen fertig gepackt haben, sind wir zum Riverwalk gegangen und sind anschliessend mit einer Strassenbahn zum anderen Ender des French Quarter gefahren. Dort wollten wir ein altes Kloster besichtigen, aber es war geschlossen. Wir sind dann einfach nur durch die Strassen geschlendert und muessen gestehen, dass wir etwas muede waren. Am spaeten Nachmittag sind wir nach Hartford, Connecticut geflogen. Dort wohnen Gary und Christa, Christines Cousine. Leider haben zwei Koffer die Reise nicht ganz ueberlebt. Danke United Airlines.
Heute haben wir nicht wirklich etwas gemacht. es gab nette Gespraeche am Tisch, etwas fernsehen und Waesche waschen. Die Kinder sind draussen im Schnee spielen gegangen. Heute gibt es leider keine Bilder.

Nous n'avons rien envoye hier car nous etions dans l'avion. J'espere que cela n'a pas ete trop dur de passer une journee sans notre blog. ;-)
Nous avons passe une derniere demie-journee a la Nouvelle Orleans a trainer dans les rues. Nous avions marche sur le Riverwalk, fais un tour de tramway avant de retourner a l'hotel pour attendre notre taxi.
Pas simple d'etre en route avec les bagages pour trois semaines et pour les premiers jours en Allemagne...
Nous prenons l'avions pour le Connecticut et arrivons tres tard a destination.
La journee suivante (Mercredi 6) nous profitons d'etre chez la cousine de mon beau pere pour nous reposer. C'est bon de se poser enfin un peu.
Dans les prochain jours, nous voulons faire Boston, New York en Washington...

New Orleans and the Mississippi

First point on today's agenda, return the car. We drove 3125 Miles with the Camry and believe us, it is a very big car. We were impressed all the stuff we took out. It gave the impression that we really lived for two weeks in the car.

After this we visited the French Market and French Quarter. We were very lucky with the weather. The announced thunderstorm did not happen. Instead we had a very warm day.

In the afternoon we took a steamboat for a ride on the Mississippi. During this we got a little impression of the damage Kathrina and the more resent Hurricanes did. On the way back to the landing we had the sun in the face and good Cajun music. Great for us. The kids were a little bored.

On the way back to the hotel we made a stop at the Cafe Beignet. Hmmmmm, sooooo goooood. As it out outside and with great music we decided to have diner there too.

New Orleans is an interesting place but the french quarter at night is perhaps more for us only. We can come back for our 25 anniversary and we will even fit better in the people.

Heute abend wir erst einmal das Auto zurueck gegeben. Wir sind in den letzten 2 Wochen 3125 Milen oder 5029 km gefahren. Der Wagen sah allerdings auch danach aus. Innen wie aussen. Wir waren sehr ueberrascht,was alles in einen Toyota Camry reinpasst, bzw. was man alles herausholen kann.

Danach haben wir das French Quarter und French Market besucht. Die Kinder hatten Spass beim Souvenirkaufen.

Am Nachmittag haben wir eine Bootsfahrt auf dem Mississippi gemacht mit einem Raddampfer. Das war sehr nett. Wir haben einen kleinen Eindruck bekommen, ueber die Schaeden, die Hurricane Kathrina und die darauffolgenden hinterlassen haben. Auf dem Weg ins Hotel haben wir im Cafe Beignet halt gemacht. Sooo lecker. Beignets sind spezielle franzoesische Kuchen. Wir haben dann auch beschlossen dort zu Abend zu essen. Es gab Cajunmusik und da es open Air war, war es nicht ganz so laut.

Wir muessen noch mal wiederkommen. Vielleicht zu unserer Silberhochzeit. Dann wuerden wird auch besser in das hier vorhandene Durchschnittsalter passen.

Finaly New Orleans

We spend a big part of the day driving to the New Orleans.
We had just a stop in a Outlet center to buy a new suitcase (we broke one during the drive) and some stuff at Ann Taylor... ;-)
Finally, we arrived in New Orleans and have a great room in Hotel St Marie in the middle of the french quarter, just half a block from the famous Bourbon Street.
We will spend our 2 last days here before to fly to Connecticut and we are very excited about it.

Heute sind wir ganz gemuetlich nach New Orleans gefahren, die letzte unserer Autofahrt Stationen. Die Landschaft ist sehr interessant gewesen. Sehr viel Wasser, Bayou. die Autobahn war ueber Kilometer auf Stelzen und rundherum Wasser und Baeume. Es soll dort Krokodile geben. Wir haben es nicht nachgeprueft.
In New Orleans sind wir im einem schoenen Hotel im franzoesischem Viertel abgestiegen. Unser Zimmer ist zwar direkt unter dem Dach, aber es ich trotzdem sehr schoen.
Morgen berichten wir von unserer ersten Tour durch diese Stadt.

Nous avons passe une partie de la journee a rouler vers la Nouvelle Orleans. Nous avons marque une pause dans un centre commercial pour acheter une nouvelle valise (j'en ai casse une durant le voyage...)

Nous sommes dans un super hotel (St Marie) a une vingtaine de metres de la fameuse rue Bourbon. Nous passerons nos deux dernieres journees ici avant de nous envoler vers le Connecticut.

Houston Kindermuseum and Hurricane Ike

We decided today to make a kids day. That's why we went to the Houston Children Museum.

Julie and Henri had a lot of fun playing outside with the water games and inside with the construction games.

After this, we went to Galveston. We read that it is a very beautiful town. But, when we arrived, what a shock. Broken houses, empty stores, closed restaurants...

We learned that they just had a Hurricane (Ike ) on September 13th. This happens when you don't have TV at home. We really did not know. We wanted to have lunch in the city but nothing was open. All under construction.

We took the ferry to the other side of the bay and thought we are away from the disaster area but we had our second shock. It was a disaster. Everything is just trash: houses, cars... People lost everything. I was really depressive. The area was hit by the wind and the water. In some areas it was more than 12 feet high. Left and right of the road all the destroyed houses and the dawn with fog came over. Scary, scary, scary. We finally found a hotel in Beaumont, a bit more inland. Good night.

Wir sind heute im Houston Kinder Museum gewesen, wo Henri und Julie sich richtig austoben konnten. Anschliessend sind wir nach Galveston gefahren, um den Strand zu sehen. Doch leider hat dort eine schreckliche Ueberraschung auf uns gewartet. Die Stadt wurde am 13. September vom Hurrican Ike sehr beschaedigt. Jedes Haus war irgendwie kaputt oder komplett verschwunden. Unsere Plaene dort zu Mittag zu essen, sind nicht realisierbar gewesen, da alle Geschaefte und Restaurants geschlossen waren. Wir sind dann mit der Faehre auf die andere Seite der Bucht gefahren, aber dort war alles noch viel schlimmer. Die Bilder zeigen einiges davon. Auf dieser Strasse kamen dann noch die Daemmerung und Nebel hinzu und ich muss sagen, dass ich heilfroh bin, dass unser Hotel in Beaumont landeinwaerts liegt... gute Nacht.

Activites pour enfants avec la visite du Children museum.

Les enfants ont pu apprecier les activites durant 2 heures avant de reprendre la route vers Galveston, une ile au sud de Houston. Nous pensions y dejeuner et passer un moment sur la plage. Quelle surprise en arrivant ... Une tornade tres devastatrice y est passer le 13 Septembre dernier et rien n'est reste debout. Tres impressionant. Ce fut plus impressionant encore lorsque nous sommes arrives de l'autre cote de la baie en Ferry. Tout y est detruit. Tout n'y est qu'un amas de maisons detruites, de voitures renversees et de sable. Quelle tristesse!

San Antonio - Alamo and Mrs Del Conte

We are still in San Antonio and we reserved the day to see THE Alamo. You know the one with Travis, David Crockett... if not, watch the "great movie" with the same name as title. It was very interesting to learn about the revolution from the Texans to make their state independent from Mexico in 1836 before they jointed the US in 1861.

The BIG, BIG, BIG event of the day was ...... lunch with Emily Del Conte, Henri's teacher from Monta Loma. She grew up in the town and visit her family for the Holidays. We had a hard time to contact her, because Christine lost her Cell phone number but you can find nearly everything in the Internet. In the afternoon we hit the highway again for Houston. The landscape was very different than during the first week. There were green prairies with cows and horses and trees without leaves. It look much like northern Germany.

Wir sind heute noch in San Antonio und besuchen den Alamo. Hier wurde Texas Geschichte geschrieben. Beinahe waere Herr Bush Mexikaner gewesen.

Zum Mittag haben wir Henris Lehrerin getroffen. Sie hat hier ihre Eltern besucht und wir haben die Gelegenheit genutzt sie noch einmal zu sehen. Die Freude war gross.

Anschliessend sind wir nach Houston gefahren. Die Landschaft hier erinnert sehr an Norddeutschland. Gruene Wiesen und Weiden mit Rindern und Pferden und Laubbaeume, wie sie im Winter halt so sind... kahl.

Visite de Fort Alamo et nous en apprenons un peu plus sur la guerre des Texans pour obtenir leur indepedance du Mexique en 1836 and de se jeter dans les bras des US en 1861...

Le gros evenement est le dejeuner avec la maitresse d'Henri qui rend visite a sa famille pour les fetes.

Nous reprenons la route vers Houston.
