Houston Kindermuseum and Hurricane Ike

We decided today to make a kids day. That's why we went to the Houston Children Museum.

Julie and Henri had a lot of fun playing outside with the water games and inside with the construction games.

After this, we went to Galveston. We read that it is a very beautiful town. But, when we arrived, what a shock. Broken houses, empty stores, closed restaurants...

We learned that they just had a Hurricane (Ike ) on September 13th. This happens when you don't have TV at home. We really did not know. We wanted to have lunch in the city but nothing was open. All under construction.

We took the ferry to the other side of the bay and thought we are away from the disaster area but we had our second shock. It was a disaster. Everything is just trash: houses, cars... People lost everything. I was really depressive. The area was hit by the wind and the water. In some areas it was more than 12 feet high. Left and right of the road all the destroyed houses and the dawn with fog came over. Scary, scary, scary. We finally found a hotel in Beaumont, a bit more inland. Good night.

Wir sind heute im Houston Kinder Museum gewesen, wo Henri und Julie sich richtig austoben konnten. Anschliessend sind wir nach Galveston gefahren, um den Strand zu sehen. Doch leider hat dort eine schreckliche Ueberraschung auf uns gewartet. Die Stadt wurde am 13. September vom Hurrican Ike sehr beschaedigt. Jedes Haus war irgendwie kaputt oder komplett verschwunden. Unsere Plaene dort zu Mittag zu essen, sind nicht realisierbar gewesen, da alle Geschaefte und Restaurants geschlossen waren. Wir sind dann mit der Faehre auf die andere Seite der Bucht gefahren, aber dort war alles noch viel schlimmer. Die Bilder zeigen einiges davon. Auf dieser Strasse kamen dann noch die Daemmerung und Nebel hinzu und ich muss sagen, dass ich heilfroh bin, dass unser Hotel in Beaumont landeinwaerts liegt... gute Nacht.

Activites pour enfants avec la visite du Children museum.

Les enfants ont pu apprecier les activites durant 2 heures avant de reprendre la route vers Galveston, une ile au sud de Houston. Nous pensions y dejeuner et passer un moment sur la plage. Quelle surprise en arrivant ... Une tornade tres devastatrice y est passer le 13 Septembre dernier et rien n'est reste debout. Tres impressionant. Ce fut plus impressionant encore lorsque nous sommes arrives de l'autre cote de la baie en Ferry. Tout y est detruit. Tout n'y est qu'un amas de maisons detruites, de voitures renversees et de sable. Quelle tristesse!
